Twenty-Three and a Half Hours

In preparation for the September, I ended up on the Ted Talks.  I have watched a few of these videos but never made the next step of using them in a lesson at school.  While browsing the health videos I stumbled across the following video which in a word is Awesome!  I will definitely be using this with my classes this semester.

Twenty-three and a half hours is clear, concise and right on the mark with respect to exercise and healthy active living.  Dr. Mike Evans refers to good science while putting a new spin on just how easy it is improve all areas of your health with a small dose of regular activity.  Sometimes 30 or 60 minutes of daily exercise seems like a lot when your attending meetings, marking, coaching, driving the kids to practise and running errands.   Throw in some Facebook, Twitter and Youtube and it becomes easy to say ahhh, it's just one day, I'll be ok if I just sit.   However, when Dr. Mike says "Can you limit your sleeping and sitting to 23 1/2 hours per day," it makes us think differently about how little time it really takes to improve our health.

Fresh Start with Help from an Old Acquaintance

Well, after almost a year, I've found my way back here writing. To say that the first year of maintaining this blog was quiet would be a massive understatement. It's amazing how quickly ideas and high hopes can fade away to after-thoughts once September rolls around.

My return to this space is partially seasonal and partially due to being inspired by reading another blog while on vaction in PEI. The author is a former friend from Queen's University who runs a successful advertising agency in Peterborough (BrandHealth). He has a book with his first 100 blog posts in which he shares his thoughts about personal life and making his business one that is both enjoyable and productive. With Labour Day fast approaching, my thoughtss have started to move away from vacationing and relaxing and more towards preparing for the storm that we all refer to as school. My energy levels start to ramp up at this time of the year and I literally have energy to burn. My challenge is to focus this productively. My aim is to offer some of my thoughts on teaching PE using technology, coaching, parenting, and living well.

 Thanks for the inspiration Paul!

Socrative and School Passwords

I tried socrative today with two of my classes. A few students were able to complete the First Day Quiz/Personal Backgrounder however I ran into a glitch with WIFI access as the school had changed the passwords from last semester. Other than that, it worked quite well for those that had a data plan. Tonight I assigned the quiz as homework by using REMIND 101

Day One of a New Semester

Well, just about to head back to school for another semester. I will be attempting to use more technology in my teaching practises this semester. I will be updating this blog with both the technology that works well in physical education and those that are unsuccessful. Tomorrow, I will be using Socrative and Remind101 to get my classes started. I have also started to follow a number of other PE Teachers on Twitter. Feel free to follow my posts and keep up to date on how we can use technology in our teaching.
